Notes from our Director of Missions

Everything that we know from Scripture about God's people seeking to know and do God's will teaches us that it starts with prayer.  We know there is power in consistent, purposeful prayer.  I am asking our church members and congregations to join together each day at 3:20 pm using the words of Ephesians 3:20 as a prompt for prayer asking for Revival in our lives, churches and communities.  Whether for one minute or five or ten or just for a second, let's JOIN together at 3:20 each day to pray.  Pray for REVIVAL.

With the coming of the Thanksgiving Holidays, our schedule for Pastors and Wives Fellowships will be a bit condensed in November. Here is the schedule as it stands right now:

Ministers and spouses, please save some time Saturday afternoon December 12 to join us at our home for some great refreshments, fellowship and a gift for each of our pastors and their wives.

I appreciate each of you and all you do for our churches, communities and the Tri-Area Baptist Association.  I want to honor and encourage you.  Join us on December 12.

As we enter the Christmas season, please help us promote your church activities and ministry by sharing them with us.  If you have a holiday calendar or flyer advertising your Thanksgiving and Christmas ministries, please send it to the Association so we can include it in our newsletter and web site.

Bonnie and I got away with some friends for a few days in Ruidoso so I was able to take my first Sunday off since starting this ministry. I am leading music this Sunday at Central's early service. I am preaching at Melrose on November 22, but the rest of my Sundays for the coming weeks are open.  Please let me know if I can help you in any way.

I am grateful to serve with you!

Damon

Some of our Tri-Area Disaster Relief workers have returned from chainsaw work in Santa Fe. Others are currently deployed to Bloomfield.  You never know what you may be working on in disaster relief - this week some have been installing flooring at the host church for the influx of many disaster relief workers in the next few weeks!

Chaplains have been ministering since October 27.

A Feeding Team arrived from Arizona Tuesday and another team arrives from California today to help the team from New Mexico.  The feeding team has been preparing 400 meals for lunch and 400 meals for dinner for people in the shelter in Farmington and to Shiprock.  That number fluctuates as people come and go from the shelters. And feeding operations have now begun at FBC Bloomfield for the volunteers who are making that their home while deployed.

Affected homeowners were not allowed to return to see their property until yesterday.  Assessment of the residences by our team begins today with anticipated recovery work beginning Monday.

Pray for these teams as they share the Compassion of the Gospel to those experiencing such a terrible disaster.

The church where the NMBDR team is staying (First Baptist Church Bloomfield) opened up their fellowship hall area to use as a POD (point of distribution) for donations for the affected people.  Here you can see some of it.

Fall Events Involving Some of Our Churches

Here are some pictures of recent events that our churches participated in.

Emmanuel Baptist in Portales participated in a city-wide event.

FBC Tucumcari had a great Trunk or Treat event.

Central Clovis also had a Trunk or Treat on a lovely evening.

JEMEZ VALLEY BAPTIST CHURCH VAN PROJECT

The minister at Jemez Valley, Daniel Clymer, has access to the Pueblo two days a week.  Jemez Valley Baptist Church is able to go on to the reservation to pick up children (around 40, sometimes 50) on Wednesdays, bring them to their church, give them Bible Study and a meal.  On Thursdays, Jemez Valley Baptist Church is allowed to go on to the reservation and pick up youth (around 20) and some adults.  They bring them to the church for a meal and Bible Study.

The pastor at Jemez Valley has the good favor of the Tribal Chief.  The minister, Daniel Clymer, is allowed on the reservation two days a week.  Other ministers are only allowed on the reservation 1 day a month.

Jemez Valley Baptist Church needs two vans.  They have $15,300 in a Van Fund.  Pleasant Hill Baptist Church has voted to send an additional $15,000 to help get the ministry the transportation they need.   Other churches and individuals are invited to join in the effort.

The "Book" of the Week is Discipleshift: Five Steps That Help Your Church to Make Disciples Who Make Disciples by Jim Putman, Bobby Harrington, and Robert E. Coleman. It is listed under the Evangelism and Discipleship tab in the Good Books section on our website.

Question: What is the God-given purpose of the local church?

Answer: Relational discipleship.

DiscipleShift walks you through five key "shifts" that churches must make to refocus on the fundamental biblical mission of discipleship. These intentional changes will attract the world and empower your church members to be salt and light in their communities.

Over the last thirty years, many influential church leaders and church planters in America have adopted various models for reaching unchurched people. While many of these approaches have merit, something is still missing, something even more fundamental to the mission of the church: discipleship.

Making disciples—helping people to trust and follow Jesus—is the church's God-given mandate. Devoted disciples attract people outside the church because of the change others see in their Christ-like lives. And discipleship empowers Christians to be more like Christ as they intentionally develop relationships with non-believers.

Through biblical and professional insights, Jim Putman and Bobby Harrington discuss the transformational effectiveness of making disciples and just how to do so, in practical terms. You’ll learn:

  • The specific roles of a disciple-making pastor.
  • The components of person-to-person discipleship.
  • How each ministry in your church leads to discipleship.
  • How to implement discipleship in your church.

Disciple-making leaders will not produce perfect churches, but they will create effective churches.
